I loved the energy behind SMYLY patterns – their byline was ‘sewing makes you love yourself’, and the movement helped me to make massive leaps in personal confidence and see myself in a more positive light. Sadly, SMYLY patterns are no longer running but the ethos behind them lives on in one of the SMYLY co-founders brand in her own name Athina Kakou. So you can only imagine my happiness when Athina contacted me and asked whether I would like a copy of her first solo project, the Sheona dress and top pattern, in exchange for a review.
Although Athina gave me a free copy, all she asked for was a review on either Instagram or Youtube, which I have done, so this post wasnt required but it is such a good pattern that I wanted to share it with you here anyway.
Due to the design – its a loose body con style dress/top in jersey, I didnt feel it would suit my plus size figure to have the full dress, but I was in dire need of some tops so I decided to use this pattern as a basic tee pattern.
One of the things I loved about SMYLY patterns was their inclusive sizing, and this has carried over into Athina’s patterns. A pattern cannot go wrong when I don’t even reach the top of the scale! AND I sized up for this pattern as I was after a lose fit.
I didnt want frills (nearly wrote thrills! I always want those!) so only cut out the front and back and then I measured for a neckband and cut that out. I sewed it up on the serger et voila!
I was happy with the result and so I moved straight on to my second one, without making adjustments.
I also love this one, although it is a viscose jersey (at a guess) so was a little clingy on my tummy – so I’ll watch what I wear with it.
Then – as if by magic – more jersey fabric arrived at my door! (Actually, MAJOR reduction in price and thought it was woven but it wasnt)
Guess what? Yes, you have it – I whipped up a third inside 24 hours.
I love this pattern and have plans for at least another 4 – once I have the fabrics available!
I’ve filmed a vlog on youtube talking about my review in more detail, please watch like subscribe, all of that jazz!

Thanks for reading – until we talk again, bye for now…
